Call for Papers: 5th International Scientific Session on “Gheorghianism and the Foundations of the Roma Nation”
The Roma Education Fund, together with the Faculty of Political Science at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) in parteship with Centre for Roma Studies of the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest, is pleased to announce the opening of registration for the 5th edition of the International Scientific Session “Gheorghianism and the Foundations of the Roma Nation.”
The event will take place on 5–6 November 2026, at the SNSPA headquarters in Bucharest, Romania.
A platform for research, dialogue and knowledge
The scientific session brings together students, researchers and academics interested in Roma history, identity and culture. It offers an opportunity to present original research, exchange ideas and contribute to a growing body of academic work focused on Roma communities and their place in society.
The call is open to:
- third-year undergraduate students;
- master’s students;
- PhD candidates;
- researchers.
Participants are invited to present their research in the fields of social sciences, bio-medical sciences, humanities, history, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, foreign languages and literatures – with a specialization in Romani.

The scientific session “Gheorghianism and the Foundations of the Roma Nation” is a tribute to the humanist legacy of the late Roma sociologist Nicolae Gheorghe, widely recognised as a founding figure of Roma civic activism in Romania and an influential reformer of the international Roma movement.
Since its first edition, the event has developed into an important meeting point for researchers, academics and students interested in Roma history and contemporary issues. The previous editions have created a space for academic dialogue in which original ideas, new research and different disciplinary perspectives have been presented and discussed.
The conference has also contributed to strengthening the connection between academic research and the broader discussion surrounding Roma identity, history, political participation and social transformation.
Over the past four editions, the scientific session has brought together researchers, doctoral candidates, master’s students and academics from Romania and abroad. The papers presented have addressed a wide range of subjects, from Roma history and identity to political participation, education, social transformation, discrimination and cultural representation.

The scientific session is also intended to support the dissemination of high-quality research beyond the event itself. Selected contributions from previous editions have been published in dedicated issues of Sfera Politicii, helping to preserve and further develop the academic dialogue initiated during the sessions.
The most valuable papers presented during the 2026 edition will likewise be considered for publication in a future issue of the journal.
