From REF Alumna to Leader: Ina Majko Appointed Deputy Minister for Health and Social Protection in Albania

TIRANA, Albania – We proudly celebrate a remarkable milestone in the journey of Ina Majko, a former REF scholarship recipient from Albania, who has recently been appointed as Deputy Minister for Health and Social Protection in the Government of Albania. This historic achievement marks the first time a representative of the Roma community holds such a high-ranking position in the Albanian government.

Ina Majko is a communicator, environmentalist, and tireless advocate for Roma rights and social inclusion. Born in the town of Delvinë in southern Albania, Ina studied Biology and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Central European University. During her undergraduate studies, she received the Roma Memorial University Scholarship Program (RMUSP) grant offered by REF.

Ina has consistently built on the values of education, equity, and representation. In 2021, she made history as the first Roma woman to run for the Albanian Parliament, breaking long-standing barriers and inspiring countless others in her community.

Beyond politics, Ina has used media and storytelling as powerful tools for change. As the creator and host of the radio program Romët Krenarë (Proud Roma), she has brought visibility to Roma identity, culture, and voices too often left unheard. Her work in communications and public engagement has challenged stereotypes and promoted pride, dignity, and belonging.

Her appointment as Deputy Minister is not only a personal achievement, but also a powerful symbol of progress for the Roma community in Albania and across Europe.

The Roma Education Fund is honored to have played a part in Ina’s educational journey and celebrates her as a role model for the next generation of Roma leaders.
